Last week my son celebrated his SIXTH birthday! I still cannot get over the fact that he is SIX years old! He assures me that he will always be my baby boy, we will see how he feels about that on his tenth birthday!
I wanted to take a minute to share with everyone some of our birthday traditions we use to help make each birthday special without spending a ton of money!
I start the night before with blowing up a pack of balloons and covering their bedroom floor while they are sleeping! I grab multi packs of assorted balloons at Dollar Tree, you guessed it….for just ONE dollar! All the kids love this, even my 13 year old! I didn’t grab a picture of this but we also use crepe paper to hang streamers from the door. Crepe paper is also available at Dollar Tree in assorted colors!
Then they always get birthday pancakes (just use food coloring!) with a candle and we sing Happy Birthday! Dollar Tree has some great candle options, especially for the younger kids. (This past year for my daughter’s 13th, they even had sparkler candles!!)
I usually make whatever their favorite lunch is and go to school to eat lunch with them. However this year my son asked if I would bring him a Happy Meal! Now, I fully understand that one of these years they may think it’s “not cool” to have your mom come eat lunch with you at school, but we haven’t run into that yet!
Then after school we head to Barnes and Noble for their free birthday treat! If you haven’t signed up for Barnes and Noble kids club, it is absolutely free and you can do it here, B&N Kids Club. They receive a coupon during their birthday month for one free cupcake, cookie or gluten free Rice-Krispies treat! I didn’t get a picture of this either, but my little guy chose the Gluten Free Rice-Krispies treat, and it was delicious!!
Finally, we let the kiddo pick our their birthday dinner (within reason of course!) My eight year old always chooses something homemade, my teenager picks something new each year, but this little guy has chosen Chuck E Cheese every year he has been old enough to choose! Chuck E Cheese has always allowed us to bring in our own birthday treats, which is awesome! We used our candles again from the morning 🙂 I looked up coupons for the place he chose to eat and ran into this, Chuck E Cheese Coupons. Even more awesome, while playing on their website I found these Reward Calendars offering 10 free tokens per kid and had each of the kids fill these out, scoring us an extra 40 tokens!
